Tin Pan Alley Steelband

Hi! I’m Willi! Or is my name Michael, actually? - To be honest, I don’t know it anymore. Someday in school somebody started to call me Willi. Indeed, that’s already 22 years ago, however it is still in use.

Willi, turn right!Willi, turn left!

Apropos school: I was lucky to go to the Clay Oberschule in Berlin for 6 ½ years, because my musical life started here.

There we had an unique experiment, which was the only one in Europe in these times. We didn’t have music with teachers, but with musicians.Furthermore this project brought us several studios with instruments for everybody. We had drum sets, guitars, pianos and keyboards, and ... you are right, we had steeldrums.

I started to play drums in the 7th class, in the 9th class vibraphone and mallets were added. In high school I got the firsts touch with steel pans. I played single tenor from the very beginning.

Let's play the drums!

After high school diploma I played the vibraphone in several bands in parallel, mostly latin and jazz standards.

In February 1984 I joined the Tin Pan Alley. The single tenor is played by me at TPA as well. Up to now I have arranged some pieces for the band, one of them you can hear on our CD (Which one? - I am a Disney fan!).

1, 2, 3, 4, ...
The atmosphere is great!

Although I am playing with Tin Pan Alley such a long time, it is still much fun for me. It is very satisfying for me to play on stage, where I can see our audience enjoying themselves. These are the moments, where I can forget, that I have played some of our pieces several hundreds of times, already.

The noisy tenor!

I always had a dream, since I started playing the drums in school: To play in a Rockband having a cool concert. I got it, this year on Oktober 2nd, 2002. I started playing the drums with “Twiligth Affair” in August 2001. Now we had our cool concert. We rented a Rockclub and invited all of our friends. We had app. 250 visitors this evening, “An Evening with Friends”. We played old pieces from Queen, Westernhagen, Mr. Big, Deep Purple, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Van Halen, to name some of them. It was a great atmosphere, everybody, including us, had a lot of fun.

I like playing on stage with bands. It’s a cool feeling, if you are able to give the audience some great hours. This is the time, when everybody on stage feels very happy, as well. I definetely noticed that the drums were my first instrument, I felt really great.
