Kalindas are the predecessors of the Calypso. The history of the Calypso starts with the release of the slaves 1838. Originally it was an ironic and satirical song, which was sexual and personal. It changed from the irony via social criticism - mockery and derision of the British Crown - to the song of
resistance of the underground. Time of prosperity of the Calypso is 1900-1940. In the 50’s musicians like Harry Belafonte brought the Calypso to Europe, it was changed to the Moe, which became uninteresting after some time like it happens often with new fashions. 1. It starts with an introduction, which uses a part of the melody or a rhythmic phrase. 2. Two personalities can be seen clearly: a) Arrangement of the theme like the european sonata. b) Phrases like verse/refrain and Call-And-Response are African origin. 3. It ends with a coda. 4.The result is neither African nor European music, it is one of the music type of the Caribean: The Calypso. |
